Elucidation of Fluid Streamlining in Multi-Layered Porous Transport Layers for Polymer Electrolyte Water Electrolyzers by Operando Neutron Radiography

Developments of the porous transport layers (PTLs) in recent years resulted significant performance improvements polymer electrolyte water electrolyzers (PEWEs). One milestones material design was integration a microporous layer (MPL) on sintered titanium PTLs. Utilizing high-resolution neutron imaging, and gas distribution multi-layered media (ML-PTL) probed at various current densities (up to 4 A cm −2 ) pressure conditions up 8 bar, using series four materials, differing MPL morphology. The measured is greatly affected by presence an MPL. While bulk PTL, accumulation increased MPL, itself more retained. finer structure, higher liquid saturation. It observed that two-phase flow has minor influence cell even though CL interface reduced. improvements, therefore, appear be related interaction sub-micron scale microstructure effect catalyst area utilization.
